Hey Folks,
I have included all the updates I have been mailed, or have been told about above.
Uh, Ean...looking at your Georgian CP Society, it seems like it hasn't quite gotten off the ground yet. Maybe you should contact me when you launch the society.
Cheers

Hey Folks,
It is the summer, and the time of the year that I do my FAQ updates that I haven't gotten around to.
I'm planning on streamlining the FAQ list of CP societies. Specifically, I am going to eliminate the snail-mail addresses, and also much of the information about each society. Instead, I'm going to reduce this page to a simple list of societies and their web sites.
If a society does not have a web site, I'll include some kind of alternate information, but most societies have web sites so this should not be a problem.
Cheers
Barry

Hey Folks,
Yet another field trip, yet another video.
Bear with me--I'm still learning the rudiments of videography, and my lame computer can barely churn out usable video. (My source video is much higher quality.)
In fact, my computer couldn't process my video from this site as a single clip, so it it presented as two clips.
Enjoy!

I have no idea why I was targeted. But it has complicated my life! I've submitted requests for reviews to hphosts and mywot, but neither web site has moved on my site yet.
It's a little frustrating that these sites pronounce other sites as reliable or unreliable, but why they apparently do in-depth analyses of other sites, they do not proactively contact the so-called flawed sites with warnings. Scanning the various forums of these sites, I find I am certainly not alone. Lots of harmless websites can lousy reviews because they've been hacked. Leading with a stick, instead of a carrot, is not particularly helpful.

Gather 'round and hear this tale... A few decades ago, when I was a novice at seeing CP in the field, I was on a vacation in South Carolina. I took a day to track down a site that Don Schnell had told me about. After a few hours, I was within a km of the site, but was stopped by a fence and a "no trespassing" sign. I am slightly ashamed to admit this, but being young and foolish, I hopped the fence and skulked around the bushes. Children, do not do what I have done. It is a recipe for buckshot in your butt. Yet, the world is not inherently a moral place, and I was rewarded for my sin by spectacular views of mixed stands of Sarracenia flava, including marvelous coppertops (var. cuprea). I was a terrible photographer back then, but here is a barely usable image from that trip: I spent a few sweet hours there, simply poking around and exploring, until I heard a couple of farm dogs barking in the distance. I hustled back to the fence, hopped across, and darted into my car. Anyway, I just checked the site, via GoogleEarth. Here--I'll give you the EXACT coordinates for the location. And you'll see why--today--I am in a sad mood. 33° 4.026'N 80° 11.334'W

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the information about these ratings. As Bob noted, I have had my site hacked a couple of times in the past. Most recently, I was dismayed to find really NAAAAAAASTY content on my web site.
I've since changed passwords, removed alien content, etc. I'm signing onto these web sites to try to get my ratings changed.
Sheesh.

Really nice video Barry. There are no further plants downstream? Hey Dave, When we arrived at the meadow, we took a break and then headed up-slope. The total distance from bottom site to top site was about 0.6 miles. There is another 0.2 miles (downstream) that we still have not surveyed. I suspect we'll come up empty on that stretch, but we'll give it a shot. Meanwhile, GoogleEarth shows a several other inviting looking places in the same area. This will take a while to finish, and might be best done on a long weekend. I'm going to wait a few weeks before I go back---it will be a lot easier when we can get closer to the sites, without the long slogs on foot over snowfields.

Hey Brian,
In the evening, I suspect it still gets down just a few degrees above a frost.
Hey Paul,
The plants were growing in 100% organic material (peat). The ground is pretty "quakey" as you walk on it.
Under that, there's the usual gravel/sand mix. I did not see any serpentinite, which is interesting. I'm going to see if I can find some geological maps which might help on that one.

Hey Folks!
Beth and I just had a very successful trip, looking for Darlingtonia in Sierra County, California. It was a recon trip, so I didn't do detailed macrophotography. HOWEVER, I did take video, and produced a short piece that I'm rather pleased with. Warts, yes. Werner Herzog, no. But I'm pleased!

Hey Guys, My wife and I have returned from a trip to Europe, where we spent a few weeks in Portugal and southern Spain. We met wonderful CPers on the trip, and toured several sites. The high points include Drosophyllum, Pinguicula lusitanica, and Pinguicula vallisneriifolia. You can see the trip reports here: Portugal: www.sarracenia.com/faq/faq7653.htmlSpain: www.sarracenia.com/faq/faq7654.htmlIn addition to my photography, I've included video snippets throughout. My video work is, shall I say, unsophisticated. But I hope you'll enjoy it! Cheers Barry

Hey Folks,
I'm happy to say my trip to Europe was a great success. I had a lovely time in France, Portugal, and Spain. While I did not get to any CP sites in France, Portugal and Spain were both good to me.
I'd like to thank everyone who helped me prepare for this, and for being so understanding of my mercurial schedule. While I was sadly not able to connect with French CPers (although both sides tried very hard to make such a thing possible), I met several Portuguese CPers and had a great time in the field.
I'm currently editing my photographs. New to me is the addition of short video clips I can add to the trip reports. I'm not sure how much this will slow down my work, but I will try to be speedy with a trip report!

Hey kohleric and François
I will email you shortly. I am sorry it has taken me so long to get back--my teaching schedule has been hectic this semester. I am leaving tomorrow morning for Paris.
Briefly, my schedule is to fly to Paris, then after a few days, travel to Spain and Portugal on the 28th. I will then return to France on the 6th of June, and will be there until leaving on the 11th of June.
My time in France is not entirely my own to schedule. I am travelling with my wife, and am visiting her mother who lives in Paris. They are both artists, so I expect to see many museums while in Paris. However, I might be able to convince them to take a day in the field. It would be lovely!
I do not have contact information for my location there, but I should be able to monitor my emails. Ideally, email me at bamrice-at-ucdavis.com. (Replace the -at- with @.)
It would be fabulous to meet folks from Dionee. I have long been a big fan of your journal!
Cheers
Barry

Hey Martin,
We sold these widely for several years from UCDavis, but after a while we could find no takers so we stopped selling them. I don't think we even have the plants in our collection anymore...these plants were a bit too floppy for my tastes. The old pitchers topple and make the plant look messy.
