Hi there,
I'm trying to find good pictures of the purple, nearly black variety of S. alata but I'm not sure of the spelling. I purchased one such plant but morphology of the lid in the new leaves is different than the s. alata I'm used to, so I want to compare it to some pictures of this variety. Also, pointers to where I may find such pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Neither name is valid. The best place to look for images is BobZ's Photofinder here: users.humboldt.edu/rziemer/Sarracenia.htmlLook for "Black Tube" plants. In the meantime, here's a couple of shots of one of my plants from last August -
