I am planning on building my first bog garden this year and I was wondering if the drugs produced by sarracenia could be harmful to humming birds. My wife and I (and our cats) greatly enjoy watching our hummers each year and we manage to attract many to our feeders. Now I want to start a temperate bog garden with a variety of Sarrecenia species. After seeing all the yellow jackets that my N. xJudith Hindle caught last year, I want to have my new bog garden located close to my house.
Does anyone have experience with humming birds being attracted to their sarracenia plants and can they tell me if they think the birds may be harmed by them.

Only S. flava produces coniine. We have lots of hummers here but they've never visited the plants.
I heard a rumor that a GIGANTIC binata complex plant caught a sick one but I can't confirm that. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

I've never seen them go to any of my pitchers before, nor have I heard anyone mention it happening to them. I wouldn't worry about it.

I've never seen hummers show an interest in any of my pitchers either. Sarracenia is not poisonous.

I have noticed a hummer or two hover over a S. leuco, apparently in curiosity, without making any attempt to sample any nectar from it, which should be harmless, UNLESS one has used a systemic pesticide on it, in attempt to control mealy bug, scale or other pests.

Thanks to you all for your help. I guess I'll go ahead with my project as planned.
