July 13, 2014 My friend Ross took me for a drive on the winding roads around Mt. Hood with the goal of seeing unique mountain flora. We stopped at a lake and a bog and found Drosera rotundifolia at both, though their respective growth forms and habit were very different. The bog was situated at the base of a ski slope at about 3000ft and was fed by snow melt which drained into a small creek. Most of the bog's surface area was dominated by foot-high grasses but there were a few clearings sparse enough to support colonies of a few dozen Drosera. In mid July the flower spikes were not quite open yet but the leaves were quite beautiful on their own-drenched in red by the summer sun. We also visited a popular lake and saw rotundifolia again at the edge of a marsh. The Drosera here were obstructed by tall grass and took on a much greener color. They clearly had a much harder life around the disturbed lake as evidenced by their fewer numbers and lack of habitat. -Josh
