I have a few nepenthes and was thinking of putting them into a more interesting hanging basket than the plastic one they came in. I would like to make something out of wood. Like this… Then I thought,"What should I do about the bottom?" Maybe some wire mesh for drainage… Now I'm wondering about what to put underneath to keep water off of the floor. Maybe I should keep a solid wood bottom, but that would still leak. I would like to put it next to a window in my living or dining room but it needs to look 'nice', I guess that means no plastic buckets on the floor. Does anybody have a good idea? What do you use? Thanks! Bud

The easiest is to have the mesh bottom but watering it outside, and bringing it in half or 1 hour later. Or not outside but in another place with the bucket below. Also something I do here to water hanging plants, is that I had a really big clay pot strategically below the plant. All the extra water went into the pot and no one (even my mom, who is the owner of the pot) noticed the use I gave to it.

I like the fancy container underneath idea, thanks coline.
Do the roots have any problems getting tangled in the mesh or is that not a big deal?

Nepenthes has tiny roots, some day they will get to the mesh, but if you observe it, repot to a bigger pot.

Finally got around to building a basket for my Nepenthes. Kind of rustic jungle looking. I might stencil on something cool to make it look more like an old crate. I'll string up some rope to hang it. and with the plants in it I ended up using some landscape fabric on the mesh to keep the soil from falling onto the floor. It should still be airy.

Thanks Coline. I made the stencil I was thinking of using and used some rope to hang it. I think it looks pretty cool now.
