This is a really important article. It affirms the species names as listed in the Flora of North America with a few caveats. I recommend you print the table in Barry Rice's review in the June 2012 CPN and insert it into your copy of the new McPherson and Schnell book.
Because PLoS ONE is an open access journal, download your own copy and read it. Among the highlights is the evidence of introgression between species, that S. purpurea ssp. venosa var. montana is real (why is even more interesting), and it appears the family is South American and there were two introductions into North America (we know about) on the order of 22 and 35 million years ago. There is much more you can read in the article.
