Well, I came home today to a very pleasant surprise.... anyone guess what it is? . . . . . . . . . Yep! You guessed it! Drosophyllum seedlings finally germinated. I can't remember whether I sowed 3 or 4 seeds in this pot, but below is a picture of the two seedlings I found today! I decided to try a mixture of equal parts peat, perlite, vermiculite and pumice. I'll keep you guys posted! This time I don't intend to cut back on the watering until much later. Boy was today a good day Attachments:

I'll post pictures tonight if I remember, but I wanted give a quick update. The seedlings are doing very very well. Far better in fact than the last attempt! These guys are already over 2 inches tall!! I was not expecting such a fast growth rate. (And I can already smell that honey smell!!)
I have also been doing some "experiments" which what few seeds I have. These guys took about a month to germinate with light scarification (IE filing with a diamond file until you could barely see some white). I let them sit outside with winter temperatures as we have had a mild winter here(typical temps about 35-65). They germinated a week or two after I brought them in (inside temps 65-72). I sowed another two pots of 4 seeds elsewhere which have not germinated to date- same soil mixture, temps slightly higher in the evenings. Those were sowed 01/16/12. Neither batch had any pre-treatments other than the light scarification. This is by no means a scientific exercise (or at best is a very poorly designed experiment), but I have caught myself wondering what effect tempurature has on Drosophyllum germination- as well as what effect peat has on growth rate.
Current soil mix: Equal parts peat, perlite, sand, pumice
old soil mix: equal parts vermiculite, pumice, sand, perlite (if I recall correctly... its the recipe in "Savage Garden")

So both groups had exactly the same treatment except for warmer nighttime temps for the second group? 'Looking forward to those pics.

Also different soil. Sorry I have not posted the photos. I will try to make a point tonight. I have had a lot going on.
The other pot has yet to germinate. I was going to pull that one into the greenhouse if I do not see some green in the next day or so.

Alright, I am currently full blown distracted and not getting my work done! Thanks ICPS! (You and your dang plant pictures!!!)
As I ran out the door on my way to Starbucks, I took a couple of pictures of my Drosophyllums and a picture of where they currently live. The pictures of the plants were taken outside (Notice all of the Sarracenias and VFTs out there). The picture inside is one of my cultivation setups- its a 4 level light shelf. Basically just a wire shelf with 2 4 foot florescent tube fixtures per level. The level in the picture is where a good number of my droseras live. The Drosophyllums live in the back for now but I have started cutting back on their water a bit. I will try Slack potting them soon. We will see how it goes.
Without further ado....

Side shot- US quarter there for size reference (sorry again to our international members- I need to get a ruler!) I really need to pull those weeds out of the pot before they become a big regret.... Attachments:

Looking good. You sure make me want to give it a try! Nice collection, too. Oh you totally should! The honey smell that you get every time you tend to your collection is worth it alone! I will be working in my collection tomorrow I will be sure to snap some good photos with the canon. I have noticed it seems to be doing well on less water. Might be time to move it out soon. I will likely start some more seeds soon. The other pot still has not germinated by the way. When I get a chance I plan to move that pot inside and see if that encourages germination.

Arg! Well, mine finally croaked! (Sorry I did not do more updating). I think the problem was letting it get too dry then attempting to water it and letting it stay too late too long...
I kept telling myself to Slackpot it, but was busy....
Take 3?
Try try again.... I will master growing this plant if it is the last thing I do dern it!!!
