Hello I have purchased 1000 pings, aall together there is P. primuliflora, moctezumae, and medusina, they are all fairly small and growing well however winter is getting here , and i was wondering what i should do for dormancy as i will be buying a heater for my greenhouse. Would it be possible to continue growing them through winter and let them stay warm? or should i give them dormancy/ / its my forst time taking pings through dormancy so i dont want to mess it up. By the way i live in Vancouver, and our winters are bitterly cold. I was thinking of keeping them in my room as it gets down to 14-15 C at night now compared to mch colder outside? but i dont really have the room, will they be okay in the greenhouse with a heater?
Thx for the help!

I'm still a newb but I know for a fact that P. primuliflora needs a cold dormancy, P.medusina needs a dry dormancy, and P. moctezumae can grow year-round without any dormancy whatsoever. As for keeping them in your room, the P. medusina would probably do fine; just keep it dry as it forms a "bulb" that easily rots when wet, like P. heterophylla. I don't really know about the primuliflora, but maybe you could keep it on the windowsill with the window open a tiny bit so it gets just cold enough to initiate dormancy?
Hope this helps! w03
BTW, you could probably keep your moctezumae in the room with your medusinas, because they don't mind cool temps; but they really hate warm temps. Just make sure to keep your moctezumae watered, because as mentioned before, they grow year round (like P. emarginata). Oh, and I will need to know how cold your greenhouse with a heater is to know if the pings can stay there.

Hello thanks for the replies. A little more information , i just checked the greenhouse today and it seems so far the coldest reading last night was 13 deg C and the hottest 23 deg C . This is with no heater, is there a temp i should keep all the plants together at as a compromise where they would all be happy? perhaps around 20? thanks , Mind you perhaps the night drop is beneficial , but not to the moctezmae?

Actually, I think that the temperature in your greenhouse is fine for mexican pings, even the moctezumae. As seen here: www.pinguicula.org/images/temperature/76632-pachuca.gif , P. moctezumae naturally experiences temperatures down to 12 degrees celsius in its natural habitat. Also, P. medusina should be at 20 degrees celsius when it is growing, according to world of pinguicula, and should be above freezing when dormant. However, I think that 13 degrees wouldn't really hurt it; it might stop growing, but probably would not be harmed. P. primuliflora would probably want a dormancy at this time of year. 8-10 celsius is probably fine, 12-14 degrees might be pushing it a little. Happy growing!
