I just want to make a post to let everybody know that our auction at Terraforums has closed. Unfortunately a server went down 5 minutes before the auction was scheduled to be closed. We apologize if this caused any inconvenience but it was beyond our control. All the listings have been closed and whoever has the highest bid will be the winner of the auction.
At this time we have no idea when the server will be back up.

Yeah - kinda messed up my swoop-in-at-the-last minute (or so) strategy (aka: the Forbes Conrad approach) to win some items ...

I had all my tabs open ready to drop some bids last minute, too. Thanks for understanding, everyone. xvart.

I was just getting my tabs open and about to put a few bids in when it crashed.
My experience from last year was not to wait too long because of the 30 second waiting period between posts.
Moderators have an unfair advantage not being subject to this waiting period.
The server probably couldn't handle all the connections at once.

Ya live and ya learn. Just bid bigger like the last one I tried. I wanted to double the bid so that NASC got the extra choe from me rather than the post office.

I'm excited to find out what my Sphagnum moss sold for. Last time I checked, the day before yesterday it was up to 50 bucks. 59 if you include shipping!

All the listings have been closed and whoever has the highest bid will be the winner of the auction. I suspect that this statement is made with the assumption that the Terra database automatically backs up posts immediately after entry and that the crash (cause & consequences) did nothing to harm this backup mechanism.... Any techies out there know if this assumption(s) is likely?

We've thought about that and we are hoping that is not the case. If that is the case the NASC board will have to decide what our next move will be.

As far as I know at this time, the problem was with the server service, not TF or the auction.
We apologize for the situation but it was beyond our control. We are waiting along with everyone else for forums to be restored.
I really don't know anything about the server service being used or their storage policies. I do know that Andrew is very careful and takes good care of the technical end of things for TF so I'm sure he's done all he could. Andrew was there monitoring things when it crashed.

I was freaking out, I thought it was just me and my system... not sure if I'm really relieved though, it'll just be nice to have the forum back. It gives me something to do at work, If I'd planned on the swoop in bidding method I would definitely be upset... but then again, why swoop on a benefit auction? isnt the real point to drive up the prices for charity? yeah yeah, I'm sure I'd be talking differently if I had alot of money or intent or the ability to buy some of the super nice things out there... just an a perspective for those who may have lost a bid... I'm sorry it does suck... Chris

Because it's not JUST for charity. People really want the plants; they aren't bidding for the sake of bidding. If they did that, there wouldn't be an auction. We'd all just donate.
Yeah, it's about raising money, but swooping in is a good way to get what you want.

"Sniping" is the term used on eBay.

I thought it was a great auction. We will get to see who won what without the "sniping". I actually clicked the mouse to put a higher bid on something that was already close to a hundred and my computer started acting like it was struggling and the bid went to the error page. I restarted my computer and just gave up from there.
The way I see it is people gave a lot of cool stuff for a good reason and if you won stuff or not its a fun, exiting, and all around good thing to do. I hope there's a NASC auction every year.
The Dino poop was awesome.
