Hey Folks, Imagine my surprise when I noticed in my calendar that I'm giving a talk in Berkeley on 11 May. Yep, check it out...this web page says so! botanicalgarden.berkeley.edu/program/event_des/Unselt_lecture.htmlHmmm....it claims that I'm an "acclaimed expert on every known carnivorous plant...." Wow! But it also says that I'm a professor at UC Davis, which I am not, so perhaps the details on this page are not to be trusted. But it should be fun. I will be there 1-3pm, and since it is free, it should be worth every penny! Barry

A 6-hour drive is too far to hear the internationally acclaimed Dr. Barry Rice? You gotta be kidding. How far would you drive to see the Pope? How about George Bush?

Lol I am only 17 and don't have that much gas money. I am catholic yet would not drive over 3 hours to go see the pope. Also I am republican yet I would not drive anywhere except within an hour to go see George Bush. I would love to come and hear Barry Rice speak...it is one of the things on my list to do above seeing the pope...However I won't be able to attend a meeting that is over 6 hours away....sorry

Never have I been discussed along with George Bush (either of them) or the Pope (any of them).
I am trying to figure out whether I should be charmed or offended by the comparison....

I am trying to figure out whether I should be charmed or offended by the comparison.... Perhaps they might feel the same! (j/k) ;D Seriously, it would be nice if a pdf file were made available on the 'net with the essence of your talk; just a suggestion. - Rich

Hey Rich,
An interesting suggestion, but my talks are very mutable. I don't know what I'm going to talk about until the day of the presentation.
It depends upon what the audience seems to be most interested in. Cultivation? Natural History? Conservation?
I have a couple of canned slide shows that I use, but these are really just backdrops for what I feel like talking about at the time. I mean, really, with a good set of 60 nice images of habitats and an array of carnivorous plants and their traps, you can cover just about any topic you want!
At this talk, I'll probably discuss stuff like the basics of carnivory (how, why, where), some conservation, a bit of emphasis on Californian species, and the like. But who knows?
