Anyone try Quickrete Play Sand as a sand source for growing media? I have been looking all over for silica sand and the pool guy in town doesn't have it and the horticulture supply people bring it in by the tons. I have found a basalt sand locally produced, not ocean washed so sharp and Quickrete Play Sand. The Quickrete Play Sand may originate from a NJ beach and is apparently prewashed. Saw them in a broken bag and they looked sort of worn but a bit on the big side. Anyone got ideas suggestions, tests? lots of sand here just it is not really usable all coral Mahalo, MTF

Aloha! I've used play sand for years with no ill effect...BUT... IMPORTANTLY- YOU MUST WASH IT THOROUGHLY UNTIL THE WATER RUNS CLEAR! That means, rinsing the sand several times. I put mine through a soaking method for a few days with pure RO water. Then agitate well while full of water, drain all water and repeat until water is crystal clear. Remove the small shell pieces too, if found. This has worked well for me, although it is a pain in the butt! Happy Growing, Brian.

I've used it for years too and never had a problem.
