What are the signs of bad water quality on carnivorous plants?

Use only rain water, distilled water, deionised water or reverse-osmosis purified water and you will never have to worry. Lack of rain should not be a problem in your part of the world! Much of Scotland has very soft water and you may well be able to use tap water. Investigate for yourself.

Right so i did decide to do some investigating and just got a reply from Scottish water. It was really informative and has about every element i could think for, but what ones am i looking for to be low? Also the data is taken in micro grams/litre: what are the levels i am looking for and can you please give them in micro grams/litre instead of PPM.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is the important figure and 50ppm (sorry) or less is generally considered ideal.

Is my math rusty or is microgram/liter the same as part per million?

Nope: microgram/liter is the same as part per billion
1 mg/L = 1 PPM 1 ug/L = 1 PPB

Also what ions or elements am i especially looking for to be below 50 PPM? If anyone is interested in the sheet i can find a way of sending it to you!

Largely Calcium and Magnesium salts. If you've been given an analysis, it should include a figure for TDS. If it doesn't, I suggest asking for one.

The plants that I water with tap water(not CPs) I've noticed develop a white ring in the tray if I am bottom watering and a white crust on top of the soil if I am top watering. None of this occurs with the plants I have used distilled water on.
I suspect these are salts and a sign that you shouldn't be using that water on the CP.
I noticed the same thing on land built up from dirt dredged from the ocean bottom. After it rains white rings would form as the pools evaporate and eventually leave a white crust over everything. It tasted like salt so I assume it is.
