A friend of mine has over a thousand acres near Fayetteville, NC--an area called Jessup's Mill Pond. In the next week or two, I get to go have a walk around to see what's there. Any suggestions for what I should keep an eye out for? I've been a native plant enthusiast for nearly twenty years but this will be my first field trip where I hope to see carnivs in the wild. I'll keep a close eye out for poaching activity(though I doubt the owner would care) but what plants could I see so I'll have them marked in my field guide? In my friends defense, he did sell 1000 acres to a land conservancy last year. It may have had something to do with the dressing down I gave him after he told me I could dig up anything I wanted. Unfortunately, he's not much of an outdoorsman so I will only get to explore a little unless my husband is able to go with us. Juel

Juel, Is this the area near Little Alligator Swamp off Rt 53?
Just southeast of Fayetteville, toward Wilmington lies the Green Swamp w/ a bonanza of CPs. It should be very interesting to see what you can find up there. You have the possibility of several Sarracenia (S. flava - several forms, S. rubra, S. purpurea), Utrics & Drosera species (D. capillaris, D. intermedia, D. filiformis?) and in theory - some pings. Oh - yes & maybe some VFTs ....
Let us know how you do & congratulations on convincing your friend to preserve his land. We need a lot more of that!

I don't think it's that close to the Green Swamp but I'll have to check the map(if I can find it). I asked him about the VFT--that's what he told me I could dig up all I wanted of so I suspect to see plenty. I think Jessup's Mill Pond may be a carolina bay-it's been in their family so long they got it by royal charter. It's gotten too hot for tight now, though. Juel

I live in NC and I know the area very well. I have found sundews (I can't remember which species) about a mile from there. I've also found a great S.flava site. There are reports of VFT's in the area but I haven't found any there yet.
The area is a very large Carolina Bay area. One of the best. Jessups pond is on the edge of a Carolina bay but it's not one.
I don't know if it's too late to offer, but I'd be glad to meet you there and help you search. I can also show you cp's nearby.
The Green swamp is about 80 miles from there. I actuly live about 10 miles from the Green Swamp and I would also be glad to show you cp's arund the Green swamp area.
