Hello, This is three thumbnail photographs of Brocchinia reducta flowers and seed capsules that I have grown from seed, produced by a single plant of mine in 2000. This photo shows the capsule swelling after pollination. This is of the open flowers This thumbnail shows the flower bud and apparent ovary, prior to the flower opening. In my greenhouse when the parent plant flowered, there were a several flowers with seed capsules that I managed to get viable seed from. Indoors I am surprised that the plants grow at all let alone flower. One flower did manage to produce very few seeds, one of which germinated and then quickly damped off. My question is does the fact that this species only produces seed from flowers that have apparent ovaries, prior to the flowers opening, make this species monoecious? When I looked carefully at the flowers of this plant, they all seem to be complete and perfect, having sepals, petals, stamens and carpels. I am sorry if the digital photographs are not high enough in quality to show their features more clearly. Take care, Steven Stewart
