In the midst of attempting to make room for visitors to actually enter the tunnel on Saturday, I came across this: I have seen all sorts of malformations over the years, but this is a new one. The flower belongs to a a seed raised White's Crossing S. alata. It is a large and lightly pubescent plant, but is otherwise unremarkable.

I think your Sarracenia flower is quite remarkable! Has this plant flowered with a normally formed style in the past? Take care, Steven Stewart

I love it! If it does this every time it should be a cultivar.

Has this plant flowered with a normally formed style in the past? Steve - My memory is notoriously sieve-like... The plant is one of a batch from seed and as far as I can recall this is the first year it has flowered.

Hey Aidan,
Any similar emergences on the inner surface? Do any bear stigmatic lobes? Does the plant have normal stigmatic lobes?
Uh, you haven't been applying weird chemicals to your plants lately, have you?
VERY cool.

Barry - Having rearranged almost every plant for the open day, I had to go looking for this one! Any similar emergences on the inner surface? The inner surface appears normal, but there are a couple of thread-like emergences on the ovary casing, each perhaps one third of an inch long. Do any bear stigmatic lobes? No. Does the plant have normal stigmatic lobes? Yes. Uh, you haven't been applying weird chemicals to your plants lately, have you? I would like to be able to carry out some colchicine experiments if only I could lay my hands on the compound, but in this case the answer is no.

Adian, It would be interesting to see if it does this again. Keep us posted? Here are two photos of a second year seedling of flava which decided it was going to develop its mouth then changed its mind and grew another inch. The new mouth is at right angles to the aborted first mind you. The first mouth failed to open. I hope this works: Dave.

Cool. So it's most likely stable. Any ideas for a name?

nooooo must not suggest name... Forget it, cant resist. How about 'Green Piles' or you could just get blatant and call it 'Green Hemorrhoids'. I'm not sorry, I just couldn't resist.

PLEASE, don't give Aidan suggestions....you never know what kind of strange cultivar name he might come up with. He's done it before, you know....

Then I'll bet he was thinking something along those lines. How about 'Prep H'? I mean if I look like that (sans the green coloration) I would have a pound of it packed in there and be screaming for my donut.
