Right know I know almost nothing about basal shoots.
Ok, I got a new N. Ventricosa and there was the plant, and a vine that comes from the bottom/side of the plant. Is that a Basal shoot or a climbing vine?

Right know I know almost nothing about basal shoots. Ok, I got a new N. Ventricosa and there was the plant, and a vine that comes from the bottom/side of the plant. Is that a Basal shoot or a climbing vine? Secondary vines start off as basal shoots from a main vine. They usually produce lower pitchers when they first initiate. They will eventually start vining and producing uppers if the particular species vines and produces uppers. Some species, such as N. khasiana, can send up a plethora of basal shoots. N. khasiana's basals produce their own root system aside from the main vine relatively quickly, and easily separate from the main vine. In fact, they almost separate themselves over time. They are separated as easily as gently puulling it away frmo the main vine. Other species may produce a basal shoot, which eventually vines, but utilizes the main vines root system. These can be separated and treated more like cuttings, and have to be separated by cutting it free from the main vine. In either case, you can excise the basal shoot from the main vine without causing the main vine any trauma or setting it back at all. If your N. ventricosa main plant is rather small (in the 4" diameter range or smaller), then the basal shoots are likely more of a by-product of the growth harmones used in the tissue culture process. Basals produced because of the growth harmones are normally very easy to separate, and almost always form their own root system quickly. I prefer to separate TC induced basals as soon as I see them, because if the basal system has a slow root development, it will be using the main plants roots system. Since the main plant is small at this point, this can really tax the main plant in providing a root system for other side shoots besides itself. And thanks for the plug Marcel
