Hi all, I just wanted to show my patient's (N. macrophylla) million dollar smile. Anyway, the pitcher opened recently and I figured by now I should have put something up in the Nep forum, so this is it for now, take care, Bluesboy (BTW, the plant's a seed grown BE- Has anyone else noticed these guys to be weeds, or did I get lucky with a vigorous clone? I got this about 4 years ago. It was an inch wide. Now it's probably a foot and a half wide-crazy isn't it?)

Nice teeth ! I think that you're a lucky man, I never heard of a macrophylla that grows that fast ! .... Or you have some pretty good growing conditions.

Dear Bluesboy, Seed grown plants are much better source for plants because you will only see plants which have been naturally thinned of the runts. With Tissue Cultured produced plants, the runts are propagated along with the strong plants, which is why is it important to TC multipule clones whenever possible. Only after removing from TC will you know for sure how vigorous a particular clone will be. I make more cuttings from my seed grown plants so as to increase the numbers of vigorous clones for people to enjoy. But of course, producing plants this way takes longer and increases the cost/price... Dave Evans www.dangerousplants.comI just wanted to show my patient's (N. macrophylla) million dollar smile. Just a question you said it was seed grown but it's a clone doesn't the seed grown eliminate the true clone part of the issue?

Nice macrophylla Bluesboy,
I'm jealous, got any of hamata?
I really like the neps with teeth, kind of makes them look vicious.
Are you growing it inside?
Dave.

Nice macrophylla Bluesboy, I'm jealous, got any of hamata? I really like the neps with teeth, kind of makes them look vicious. Are you growing it inside? Dave. Hi Dave, You would think that by now, after all these years I'd finally have got a hamata, but to be honest, I have no excuse- I think they're awesome, so I really don't know why I haven't picked one up- the closest I have is N. 'predator', which is the Exotica Plants cross of truncata x hamata. There has been a post in this Nep forum from someone who has started to see a lot more of the hamata parent in this cross, but right now, my plant is about a foot and a half wide, still producing lowers, and not really stunning in my book; I think in time it will prove to be one of Exotica's best though. Also, about the macrophylla, yeah, this guy(or girl- don't yet) is being grown under high power fluorescents in basically a huge shelving unit covered completely in shower curtain liner; sure is a sight to see next to my bed, taking up about an 1/8th of the room, but that's where all my highland Neps go. In winter the house cools to the 50s F at night, and in summer part of the enclosure is in front of a window air conditioner that I turn on at night, so they get very cold, even though here in Philly it might be 78 degrees F at night! Thanks for the interest Dave, best, Nick Haywood (bluesboy)

Shelving and showercurtain liner....hmm...great and cheap idea. In fact, its one of those ideas i'm kicking myself for not having thought of earlier! Thanks for the info though...hope you don't mind me stealing that method of construction

I've seen something similar at the house of the last president of the VCPS, whilst he was rebuilding his greenhouses at his new house. Well that's it mate, I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get myself serious about getting some toothy neps. I've got my eyes set on a villosa, hamata and marcophylla.... and it's all your fault!!! My N. maxima seems to be doing quite well, it kept sending up flower stalks so I cut them off so it would concentrate on producing pitchers. It then promptly sent out a side shoot so now I've effectively got two growing points. The new pitchers are only two to three inches long at the moment but given a year or two I'm sure they will reach a nice size. Shown here: This one would be about 7 to 8 inches long. small pitcher, notice the screw head bottom left. Dave.
