The flowers are real attractive on that plant.

I agree. Flowers are incredible. The traps are pretty ugly though... I'd grow it just for the flowers though.

I'll admit that I "feel sorry for" Wacky Traps kind of like I would feel sorry for and sympathetic to a child born with serious birth defects.
Every living thing has a right to exist and to seek fulfillment however it can, but it seems like this VFT cultivar would have challenges and might have difficulty catching insects. Does anyone know if that is true or not? So far I have wished that the individual plants of this cultivar would live as good a life as they could, but that the cultivar itself would die out. Does anyone believe it could pass on some of its "unusual" traits through its seed or pollen?

Hey Steve D,
You're right. This plant doesn't trap properly---most of the traps don't even close. It is really slow growing. Poor little thing. It creeps me out just to look at it.

I still think it's a cute lil thing with really purty flowers! It seems that a lot of people share those feelings. It certainly seems "survivally challenged" to me, and I certainly wouldn't want it to pass any of its characteristic traits by seed or pollen, but I suppose I can see how it could be considered charming. I usually support the underdog, but in this case--well, I'm not sure.

It certainly seems "survivally challenged" to me The plant is a lethal mutation and were it not being coddled by the growers that it holds a strange attraction for, it would rapidly be ejected from the gene pool... and rightly so!

I wonder if these were the result of deliberate exposure to radiation? A few years ago, some attempts were made to see what would happen if seeds were exposed to brief doses of mild radiation, and I discussed this with the person who attempted it, and informed him that it would most likely produce detrimental effects on the plant, as radiation destroys DNA, and if efforts were to made by encouraging mutations, it would have to be on the gamete level, (ie pollen, or the egg cells), as the seed already has an embryo with millions of cells already. Radiation is generally destructive, and not constructive with regard to DNA molecules.
The random array of genetic expression is most likely the best way to get "sports" out of a species. Some species seem to have a higher frequency of occurrence of these "sports", and through selective breeding, one can conceivably produce a very different looking specimen within a few generations of such breeding.

I just cant make up my mind if i like it or not.I grow a 'tarnok' with a mutant flower which i like.I guess its a question of where you draw the line.I think the fact that it cant actualy catch its own prey is a big minus. After all, that means its not realy carnivorous!

I like Clint's description. From now on when I feel bad, I'll just say I came down with a bad case of the wacky traps! It will make me feel better just saying it. Steve

The plant is a lethal mutation and were it not being coddled by the growers that it holds a strange attraction for, it would rapidly be ejected from the gene pool... and rightly so! It definitely needs to be 'coddled'. Although 'Cupped Traps' is a fairly weak grower, 'Wacky Traps' makes it look robust! Unless mine makes a surprise recovery from the roots in a few weeks, it wasn't coddled enough. ****05.11.07 update - it's still alive - but small & weak ... Congratulations to Bob for doing a great job with a difficult plant.
