Your first "what is it" is probably Rhexia alifanus.

That is reasonable. I can't claim knowledge of the plant, I just saw it in a book about Florida wildflowers.
It is likely the species found in your area are different.

The main difference in most Rhexia is the size. I've learned to ignore it as an indicator species, because it grows everywhere.
