Irmgard and I are happy to report that our first CP-movie in High Definition (HD) is ready now. Like all our HUNTING VEGGIES(R) videos it is a private non-profit production for CP-enthusiasts. The film is bilingual in the German and English language and the Blu-ray disc provides great picture quality especially on large screens. First feedback shows that the Blu-ray plays well in Europe and Australia, but may cause problems in the USA. We try our best to solve this problem asap. At the moment we recommend the DVD-version for our US-friends, which works on most players.
In the focus of our film are threats endangering the genus Sarracenia as well as strategies to protect their last habitats. Additional to the well known problems like habitat-loss and poaching, we experienced a new upcoming threat, the world-wide climate change.
Guided by our good friend Brian Barnes, we visited Alabama and Florida in May 2011 to film natural growing sites of Sarracenia and other sympatric CP. Our movie shows some of the last remarkable fields of Sarracenia leucophylla at Splinter Hill Bog (Alabama), where prescribed fire plays a key-role, as well as the famous Sarracenia flava var. rubricorpora site in the Florida Panhandle, where poaching is still a sad fact. And the beautiful Sarracenia leucophylla "pink tube" at Tate's Hell, which are now nearly totally extinct due to collections for the floral industry. In Central Florida we experience how the world-wide climate change causes increasingly hard droughts, another serious threat for Sarracenia habitats.
"Sarracenia - Endangered Gems", provides even more Sarracenia species/hybrids and other CP, like Venus Flytraps, Drosera, and Pinguicula. Beside our CP-excursions, the film shows also a visit at the AG3 Tissue culture lab in Eustis, Florida, and an evening in Longwood, where Brian Barnes has his coming out as a smokin' guitar player. Last but not least we take a glance at the new Byblis hybrid (B. cf. filifolia x liniflora), which was cross-pollinated in our greenhouse in Germany.
To give you an impression, we uploaded a trailer with excerpts from our movie in HD-quality to YouTube. Please enjoy:
