Last year, I ordered two South West Giants (from Triffid Nurseries, I think). It was my first attempt at growing VFTs outside, but they made it through the winter, along with my garden center VFT. The garden center plant was the first out of dormancy, but boy, have the South West Giants surpassed it in vigour since then! One now consists of two larger crowns and two smaller ones, while the other has only one crown so far. Neither has yet produced the fabled 4,5 centimeter trap, but both are unusually tall. Both SWGs, along with the garden center plant, have tried to flower, but I nipped off the buds so the flowering would not exhaust the plants. Attachments:

The plants are quite tall, and I have been worried that heavy rains might cause the tall, thin leaves to break. So far, this has not happened (knock on wood). Attachments:

Thanks, Alexis! So far, the biggest cause for concern has been acts of vandalism by birds who rip open the traps to get to the delicious bugs inside. If only someone would grow a cultivar large enough to eat the birds...

If only someone would grow a cultivar large enough to eat the birds... Hah, for sure!

The larger of the two South West Giants is now 17 centimeters tall with traps just short of 3,5 centimeters in length. It is a surprisingly efficient bug catcher, so I am protecting it from bird attacks with a net.
I also have two B52's, but I planted them this year, so they haven't quite gotten started yet.
