Quick question here, and I hope I get a quick answer. I just got my VFT that I order via Internet and I was just wondering, is using filtered water recommended? I have a filter right here at home and I thought maybe since it's been pretty much purified, it could be given to the VFT. I have only watered the plant once since I got it, so it can still be saved if this is not recommended. I thank you in advance for any leads.
The water you need for Venus Flytraps and most other carnivorous plants is water that has a very low mineral content. Simple carbon filtration such as found in home filters, Brita, Pur, etc... do not remove minerals. Water softeners found in many homes to reduce iron are even worse, since they replace the iron and other minerals with sodium.
For just a few plants distilled water or rainwater work fine. A new filter on the market called "Zero Water" does remove minerals. It uses an ion exchange filter. Most Target stores carry them, or you can order them from their website. For larger amounts of low mineral water you would need a reverse osmosis filter.
We have a full explanation of this with demonstrations on our DVD, "Grow Carnivorous Plants" volume #1.
