Does anyone know anything other than vermiculite that will help my soil retain moisture?
I heard vermiculite turns mushy after a few months, is this true?

Sphagnum holds more water for me than peat does, you can increase the water holding capacity by reducing the aggregate in your mixes, but watch out for too wet conditions, as this will lead to rot. I prefer to have a super well draining mix, and watering every day or second day at the least.
