My bare root order from the Carnivoruos Plant Nursery arrived this morning. I ordered one of each Dionaea cultivar: Dente, Cross Teeth, Jaws, Burbank's Best, Crested Petiol, Fang, Red Dragon, and Pink Venus. The grower, Michael Szesze, included an extra plant with my order; looks like a typical form. I had all my pots prepaired and ready before the order arrived. I got all the traps transplanted into their new homes. A new Tray-O-Traps. I ordered small stock (except for Dente) because I'm budgeting myself. Once they get established in their pots they will develope quickly. They will be kept in the green house for a while to wake up from dormancy and harden off. ;D

Wow, you really love VFTs. I look forward to seeing pictures when they grow up. Do you buy the cup-trap?

I now have four trays with eight pots each I plan on selling some of the pots this summer at the local farmers market. I also plan to exhibit a tray of my best traps at the county fair this year Yes, I guess I really like the VFT's. I hate to part with any of them, but I have to make room in my collection for new varieties or I'll be over run ;D I don't have Cupped Trap yet, but it's on my wish list [/ul]

Great to know someone who ordered from site I was planning to order also. How long did you have to wait for your mail to come? Did you also buy soil from that site or you had your own? Also what size of plants did you order, small or medium?

My bare root VFTs from Carnivorous Plant Nursery arrived by priority mail just three days after I ordered [/ul] I have been mixing my own potting medium using sphagnum peat, sharp sand and perlite. I like to put a handful of pumice in the bottom of the pots as a substrate. [/ul] I am expecting another bare root order from FlyTrapCare.com. I have these pots prepared and soaking in a tray of rain water. I like these 4" ceramic pots, but the only color I could find was Pink [/ul] I saved the sphagnum moss that was used to wrap my bare root plants. I put it in a tray on top of some wet peat mix and hopefully it will start growing. Waste not, want not ;D

I have tried to cut down on the cost of my habit..uh, hobby not by cutting corners, but by buying small stock. Once they get established in their pots, the flytraps will develop fairly quick and will get quite large their first season. I have had good luck starting from small plant stock. I just baby them more than the older ones because they have a lot less to fall back on if they are damaged from heat, cold, rot or insects. There is some truth in the old adage, "I'd rather plant a two bit rose in a four bit hole than a four bit rose in a two bit hole". Don't skimp on the quality of the peat mix, keep'em wet all the time and just about any VFT will grow :-)

Do you think that mix from carnivorousplantnursery.com is good? I don't have yet experience with growing plants so I would let them provide soil.

I'm sure that the grower, Michael Szesze can provide the best possible potting mix for your Venus fly traps. I know that I was apprehensive at frist and didn't want to make any mistakes. I have a little bit more experience now and the peat/sand/perlite mix that I use seems to work well. [/ul] Do what ever you think is best and that gives you the most confidence in your own success ;D

Four new, bare root Venus Flytraps from FlyTrapCare arrived yesterday. I got two each of Big Jaws and Cupped Trap. I potted them last night and today they are outside, enjoying a gentle spring rain ;D [/ul]
