I have heard that silica sand used for pool filters is a good sand to use.

I get my sand from the local building supply store (Cascade Block). It's 100% pure silica sand (which is what you want) and it's $13 for a 100 pound bag.

I've always used the sharp horticultural sand like Alexis suggested. Why is 100% sillica sand better, does the horticultural sand mineralize the potting mix?

Horticultural sand is silica sand and if the packaging specifies that it has been washed or is lime-free then it will be pure and ideal for use with carnivorous plants.
Builders sand is anything but pure in this part of the world and is to be avoided. It often contains shell particles and other contaminants.

I was just out shopping at my favorite nurseries to get pots and planting mix ingredients. I get my pots at Home Despot, but they don't have the sand or peat that I want. I have to go to two other nurseries, one to get sand and the other to get the peat. I like the sharp, horticultural sand because of its large grain size. I only get the Black Gold peat because I have never used anything else and it seems to be what my vft's like. ;D I just finished setting up a new tray of pots so I'll be ready when my bare root order arrives. My basic potting mix is: 2 qts sand, 4 qts peat, and 1/2 qt perlite. mmm mmm yummy delicious ;D I bought one each of eight different cultivars. I am beside myself with anticipation. ;D

Where do you get the Black Gold peat moss? Do they sell the bales? A friend of mine in the Sacramento area has been scouring the region for some place that carries that brand.

I had to hunt around for my planting mix ingredients, that's why I have to shop at two different nurseries to find what I want. Cascade Forest Products is a brand that may be more common than Black Gold and they also have peat moss in their product line. I get the Black Gold because it says on the package, 100% pure Canadian sphagnum peat moss. I just have more confidence in that claim than in a bag that just says peat moss on it. The Black Gold products are carried by an independant nursery near me. Try the URL -http://www.blackgold.bz/ They have a store locator link that may have a retail listing in your area. I haven't seen the sand or peat in any larger quantities than small bags like these. Pretty spendy for larger plantings Click on image for larger view. ;D
