Hello,
My Dionaea are more interested, it seems, on dividing instead of growing and producing excellent traps. They aren't diseased or anything, because they grow just fine, but has anyone found some way to discourage Dionaea division? Less light? More light? Some magic potion? Boy, if only that last one would come up...
Thanks, any and all thoughts are more than welcome!

I have found that some clones tend to divide more than others when growing under identical conditions. Some plants from tissue culture seem to retain the urge to divide. My guess is that 'Petite Dragon' is a TC sport of 'Red Dragon' that puts all of its energy into dividing rather than growing a single large rhizome. Each winter it produces many tiny divisions, so the plants stay small and then the next year divides into more little plants, and so on year after year.

Hello,
I have noticed that if I keep dividing clumping plants of Dionaea into single individuals, it is the best way to get them to enlarge. If left in clumps and divided into small colonies, they seem to stay small, and keep dividing. Even cultivars like Dionaea 'Clumping Cultivar' will grow into D. 'Sawtooth' looking plants, when separated into single individuals, with one growing point.
Take care, Steven Stewart

on a related note, when should I consider dividing? Given it's now the middle of winter here in Australia

jj1109, your winter climate in Melbourne is similar to mine in Eureka (coastal northern California). I find the best time to divide is when the VFTs are just initiating root elongation and before the crown breaks dormancy. Depending on the year, for me this usually occurs in early February (your early August).
