hey ppl, i have finished building a tub pond for incoming utrics. I was wondering if tap water may used as RO or distilled water is in short supply or do I have to get a fast growing companion plant (e.g. salvinia, Eichornia, ec.) to help condition the water?

It depends on the quality of your tap water. Get a water analysis print-out from your local water district, unless you get your own water from a well or spring. If your tds is 100 ppm (mg/l) or less (the lower the better), it is probably OK for your tub pond. You say you are in the "western US". Rainfall in that region ranges from <5 to >200 inches per year. If you are fortunate to live in the wetter part, simply collect rainwater.

Sorry I forgot to specify. My tap water is moderately hard, i.e., 150-200 ppm. My tub does use some rainwater.
