Does anyone have suggestions for preserving (permanently) Nepenthes traps? A deceased friend of mine used a mixture of glycerin and other substances to preserve plant parts as soft and pliable specimens, but the formula is lost to me. Are there any drying suggestions?
Regards,
Steve E.

Hi Steve, All ICPS Members have access to all back issues of CPN, our official Newsletter, in which one issue does in fact contain an article written by a good friend, that explains in detail how to preserve Nepenthes. I don't know if you're a Member or not, but if you aren't.....JOIN!! ;D
Happy Growing, Brian.

I've seen a preserved pitcher before, but I do not know what substances were used. It was clear and crystal like.

All of these Nepenthes were dried in a freezer without any additional substances. Some have obviously been painted, while others keep their natural colors for quite some time. The article in CPN that Brian mentions goes into more detail. Take care, Steven Stewart

Just a normal freezer? Really? Thats amazing. The truly amazing part is that I was married at the time! It is difficult to call a freezer "normal" when it is full of Nepenthes and Sarracenia pitchers ;D. Take care, Steven Stewart

Try Hairspray...My Mother used Aqua Net hairspray to preserve many leaves and flowers. ;D

You could use epoxy resin and a mold.. its essentially a block of hard clear plastic with a pitcher in the middle when finished. May preserve colors better because there is no air to taint it over time.

Do you know any comercial brands for that products? I have been trying to see if I could do some crafting with my plants and insects using that type of material.

I did a quick google search and there are suprisingly cheap resins out there. Itl come in two bottles always (mixing creates a reaction) and may say its for boats or counter tops but its all the same..brands are all similar just make sure its clear. If youve never done it make sure you mix very very equal parts and stir well. I once mixed unequal parts and the reaction somehow melted a plastic bucket. I want to try it too with neps!.too bad mine were shocked into dropping most pitchers recently. Soon though!
