This is the sole survivor. It has grown quickly for a bromeliad (probably because of excess nutrients. It's in a 2"+/or 5-6cm pot. The seedling leaves are beginning to be replaced by more rounded distinctly tipped more mature leaves. There isn't as much of the powder that is seen in mature plants and their offshoots. Take care, Steven Stewart

Thanks Steven! It's too bad this is the only one left...how did the others meet their fate? Dampening off?

Michael,
Many of the seedlings died shortly after germination. It is best not to move small, delicate plants because they are so tender. Just transporting them for photographs was hard on them, but I feel it was important to show other growers that this species is self compatible, with complete flowers, and not dioecious as I have read in other peoples claims. I was also growing these plants in an apartment, with many other plants that had priority of position. I would not have gotten any seeds at all if Brian hadn't kindly kept the parent plant when it was flowering. I think it will not be too long before both Brian and I will be competing for producing the most seedlings of Brocchinia reducta. Brian's photographs will always surpass mine in quality, of that I'm sure!
Take care, Steven Stewart

Thanks Steven (and Brian too!) for the great work--pushing the field a head! Most of the time I think I have the black thumb (is that the opposite of the green thumb--where everything I touch dies?). This kind of post, breaking down the info bit by bit and what not, is encouraging. Factoids, like the seedlings being delicate and vulnerable-good stuff.
Can't wait to see more photo/documentation of the Broccihina adventures. Thanks again!
Mike
