That's a nice looking trough. I'm curious if the drainpipe has a purpose? Such as for drainage or similar?

Thanks for the pictures. Please give us the dimensions of your bog. Did you give it any drainage? It appears to be added on to your deck. I have my outdoor plants on top of an old table and it's nice to get close to them to view and work with them. I like the idea of a raised bog.
If you used sand/ peat as a soil it must be very heavy to suport. I'd like to do some sort of bog also. Gale

The purpose of the the drainpipe "sump" is so one can monitor the level of the water. It also allows one to water through the sump without causing surface flooding which may not always be desirable.

Ahh, I figured it might be something like that. One of the disadvantages to a perlite mix I find is that it lifts up through the mix when watering the pots from above.
I was thinking about a system a bit like a plastic kettle has, a see-through window in the side of a trough system.
A similar set-up I guess might also have merits for some species of Utrics for educational reasons, and for non-carnivorous things like potatoes!

I used a peat perilit mix,the trough is 1 foot by 3 and I think is 5 inches deep. The water pipe never has water in it but is used to dump the water in to keep the perilite where it is suppossed to be. I used 10 mil flooring plastic with pin nails along the edge making sure to keep the away from the media. I drilled holes in the pipe and the perilite does not float since the water level is low. The plastic is non UV so I am going to replace at the end of the growing season and take everything inside since I am in zone 6 then redo with uv resistant plastic. I do want to remove some vfts and put in some purperea and more drosera though.
