I'm always on the lookout for good companion plants for my CPs. Here is a picture of Dodecatheon jeffreyi - a shooting star native to the Cascade Mountains. I grew this one from seed - it's been living in my bog for 3 years now happily. Plants grown in regular potting soil are a lot more robust, so the plant is probably a bit stunted in this nutrient poor bog. Anyone else have favorite companion plants they wish to share?

These are beautiful plants. I saw some of either this species or another called D. frigidum I believe while studying in arctic AK. just north of the brooks mountain range.
I would add some to my bogs if it were cooler here.
What are your maximum summer temperatures where your at?
Thanks, Vic

There is a list of NC native plant nurseries at this link- www.ncwildflower.org/One of them should have some local genotype of the Dodecatheon for you.

By all means, get some Calopogon tuberosus (grass pink orchid) corms. They are very easy to grow. I planted five corms four years ago, and now I have fifty or sixty! And they bloom reliably every year. I'm in South Carolina, so I know they would grow well for you.

Wonderful!
I actually just bought some Calapogon tuberosus corms and plan to add them to my bog soon. Hope they end up looking like that. While in the Green Swamp a few years back they were all over the place along with other Calapogon species and Cleistes divaricata. Cleistes is gorgeous. Has anyone tried Cleistes or is it even in cultivation?
I just picked up two species of Sabatia which should be fairly slow growing with great flowers. I'm currently digging up all of the Iris spp. that somehow got into my bog gardens. They seem to take over and crowd the Sarras so I'm getting rid of em somehow.
Another good one in the southeast is Spiranthes. They put up long pretty white scapes in the late summer here.
What are some other good ones to try? I'm trying to make things neat for the spouse. Trying to get her into CPs as much as me but she seems to prefer the wilflowers.

I'll have to find a source of Calapogon - that is amazing! Spring seems not too too far off, so I'm starting to think about new plants. glider14 - did you ever try cranberry?
