Hello, I have recently purchased the following binata varieties: multifida, multifida extrema variety, dichtoma small form (red), normal red form, and the New Zealand form. I have heard mixed reports of how to germinate these seeds. Some sites say that the multifida variety, for example, require cold stratification, and then other sites make no mention of this, and say that hot stratification is what should be used. Does anyone know why this is? Does a cold stratification period of 6 weeks dramatically improve germination? Thanks for your help, Aaron

I haven't stratified any sundew seeds I have sown and I usually get a large percentage to come up. I have noticed that sphagnum moss on the top seemed to make the seeds germinate faster but I couldn't really say for sure.

Hello! I don't think it matters when it comes to D. binata, that's why you have mixed reports. Either way, they'll germinate and are very viable. I've always just sowed on the media surface, with good light and waited 3 to 4 wks. Happy Growing, Brian.

Best Carnivorous Plants says to cold stratify them unless sown immediately after harvesting: www.bestcarnivorousplants.com/sowing_seeds.htm#DroseraIf you have many seeds and the space you could always try stratifying some and not others and see if there is a noticable difference in germination rates.
