Hello all,i just wanted to share something that i have recently discovered.I have been growing vft's and sarras in rainwater for several months.Everything was ok.Then i bought myself a water distiller-mainly for purity of water for my own consumption.I did however also give it to my most prized sarras and vft's.To my surprise the plants that recieved this extremely 'pure' water responded with faster growth and better general well being compared to those that had not recieved the preferential treatment.I wondered if anyone else had had similar results?

Could the result also be explained that it is now the time of year that plants are putting on accelerated growth? [assuming you live in the northern hemisphere] Even terrarium-grown plants get seasonal cues.

Rainwater can pick up contaminants from air pollution. If you're collecting runoff from your roof there could be contamination from fire retardant or termite treatment of the roofing materials.

I have always experienced problems with my tap water, being either from city pipelines (which may also include added chlorinates and fluoride salts) to well water, which generally contains calcareous minerals and salts; this fact being accelerated during the winter when I use trays of water on my wood burning stoves, and quickly notice the white residue that accumulates on the edges. I prefer to use distilled water when watering my plants, even for cooking and my beverages such as tea and coffee over tap water.

Ive just had another look today. The plants in distilled water continue to look more healthy with more vigorous growth.Perhaps there is something on the roof contibuting badly to the water in my rain butt.I hadnt thought of that.I think ill play safe and use distilled water on all my cp's from now on.
