Hello,
I was wondering if someone could explain the advantages and disadvantages of using live sphagnum as a growing medium. I've used it as a top-dressing in the past, but never incorporated into a mix.
Thanks!

Some plants may see it as too wet, but for D. schizandra it is the ideal medium, otherwise, it is better to use it as topping over dead sphagnum, as it is normally in nature

A number of South American sundews and a lot of highland plants do very well with it since the growing sphagnum stays well aerated as it expands, as long as it is incorporated as a component in a soil mix and not a standalone soil.
