Ok. This is my newest sarracenia and I'm not sure what kind of leaf the newest one is. I was originally thinking it was a pitcher that hadn't opened yet but there are much smaller pitchers at the bottom that are already hollow and open so that's probably not what this is. Is this a non carnivorous leaf? I hope someone knows! 5/30/2014 Left: This morning at 8am Right: Tonight at 8pm What a difference 12 hours makes in the life of a sarracenia xD

Look like a normal growing pitcher IMO.

Sarracenia typically produce two leaf types, pitchers and phyllodia, but as maiden said, this is just a forming pitcher prior to opening, then a phyllodia is similiar but it remains thin and never opens.

Ok, so it is going to open eventually? It's thin and flat so I was just assuming it would be open already if it were that tall and that it must be something different. I really hope it opens :)The other pitcher already has a good deal of bugs and there are digestive juices covering them. Carnivorous plants are amazing

That looks like a normal pitcher to me. In my observations, the size of the pitcher doesn't matter much. I have a flava that grew a 24 inch trap while throwing a cluster of little 6 inch leaves.

Well, today it finally started to open...and then 12 hours later it was almost totally open. First time I've ever seen a pitcher open like that, lol. Maybe the smaller ones that look open at the bottom of my sarracenia are just the points where they were cut off last year after dormancy? That would explain why they looked like they were 2 inches tall and already open when this one was ab out 12 inches tall or more before it opened. I'll post a pic from my phone in a second
