As a first time cephalotus owner, I wanted to ask if there is any special care I need to take with this tiny new little plant I ordered. I did not expect it to be so tiny. It has two little traps on it and I've potted it in one part peat and two parts sand as described in the book Savage Garden by Peter D'amato. It is sitting in about a quarter in he of water in a small "critter keeper" with a plexiglass lid. Am I doing anything wrong? Is there anything else that needs to be done? Also the plant was shipped bare root but had a little pure peat wrapped around the roots which were then wrapped in a paper towel and damp sphagnum. Whitney Sanford

Thank you very much do you still do the divisions? Whitney Sanford I do propagate my plants, but I don't think I have any extras at this time. I will go look.

If that is only 3 months old, might as well have grown some from seed rather than pay that price. With plants that young fungus is going to be a big concern, since young plants are more vulnerable than adults to disease damage. Pests too like to get at CPs while they are young, so watch out for stuff like fungus gnat larva, especially if the soil media isn't of high quality.

Ugh I've been having a terrible problem with fungus gnats lately! Is it ok to keep it's terrarium sealed for most of the day?

If you do have a larger one I would be happy to pay you for it. Every one of these nurseries want a ridiculous price for tiny little plants! Whitney Sanford

Whitney Sanford So long as it isn't in direct sunlight, that can work temporarily, although the lack of air flow would encourage fungal growth. If you have fungus gang infestations, you should keep the infested plants and pots quarantined off from the uninfected ones so you don't have it spread more. I say no direct sunlight because terrariums get so jot so fast in direct sunlight.

So how does one get rid of the fungus gnats without harming the delicate plants? My nepenthes and an S. Tarnok have them

PS: fungus gnats feed almost exclusively on (you guessed it) fungus, algae, and dead plant matter. They can sometimes eat plant roots near the soil surface, but I seriously doubt they would cause a problem. IE: most experienced growers ignore them and let them feast on the algae. They are doing you a favor.
