My mom thinks it is weird that I name my carnivorous plants (I call my Venus flytrap colony Lord of the Flies, like that book we all hated being required to read. It is so much better as a Venus flytrap name.) I haven't jumped the gun and named any of my drosera seedlings yet, considering 1 there are too many to track that well and 2, a number of them might not survive, so it would be pointless to rush ahead and get attached to them with names. My two pitcher plants are also nameless, but that is just because I haven't decided on them yet. Is what I so weird, or do you guys name your plants too?

Usually it's just the beginners who do that. Other than plants with cultivar names, when you end up reaching a point where there are more than 10 or so kinds of plants, naming them will just end up a chore. I'm actually a bit surprised you didn't go with the classic "Audrey."

To be fair, that Venus flytrap was my first carnivore, although I have been growing difficult and unusual plants since childhood, including cacti (never again after an unfortunate repotting incident), orchids, vines, etc.
I wouldn't have gone with Audrey because I hate musicals, and thus have never actually seen Little Shop of Horrors, though I recognize the reference. My grandma, for whatever reason, thought the flytrap monster was named Seymour, and wanted me to name my Venus flytrap that. I guess because she is getting old and nuts, and can't remember the difference between the characters. I know the characters because family members brought it up a lot, for whatever reason, that particular movie humored them.

I like Seymour. It's a reference to the movie in spite of the fact that Seymour wasn't the plant.
Personally, I've never named a plant. It could be a good thing if it helped to keep up with individual specimens. I suppose that I could give them Borg names like Seven of Nine.

Haven't named one yet, but I imagine if I did, it would be "Audrey" for reasons stated above. Somebody needs to make a horror movie with a giant sundew. Now -that- would be terrifying. sykosarahYou should still watch it. The movie really isn't that long, and as someone who doesn't care for musicals either, I can honestly say it had very little impact. The acting is so goofy and campy, it's like watching Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, just to say you have.

Wow, never thought about naming your plant. Maybe because I got a few pets: dog and two turtles. All of them have names, so if I start naming my plants it will be a little bit too much. Sounds like a funny thing to do anyway. Naming your herb Ernest for example.
