Peter D'Amato reports the following sad news: I have just posted this sad news on my personal facebook page. Mrs. Eda Zahl, wife of prolific National Geographic writer Dr. Paul Zahl, has passed away at age 87 due to heart failure. Mrs. Zahl, vivid and active till the end, had just run for city council in her Connecticut town and won the election posthumously. I wrote a very popular article on the Zahl family in the journal of the International Carnivorous Plant Society a few years ago, and it was thrilling for me to have interviewed her. Mrs. Zahl was the first human being to grace the cover of a National Geographic magazine (in a bathing suit exploring coral reefs) and was known as the "Playgirl of Nat Geo" do to her good looks and brains. We mostly remember her in Dr. Zahl's legendary 1961 article "Plants That Eat Insects", but she and her family were featured in many of Paul's articles. Her daughter and my friend Eda Kristen just notified me of her passing. I was deeply touched that my book The Savage Garden was on her night table at the time she passed on. Mrs. Zahl was adored by everyone. I recall so many times reading the many articles by Dr. Zahl and wanting to be part of their family! Farewell Mrs. Zahl, you will be missed by many! The actual article Peter wrote for CPN can be found here: www.carnivorousplants.org/cpn/articles/CPNv39n4p121_125.pdf
