Hi All,
I'm just posting a couple pics of a Heliamphora nutans that I've been growing for about 8 years. The coolest thing about this plant, which I got from CP Jungle all the way back when, is that every time I enter it into the Philadelphia Flower Show, it wins a 1st Place; it has never taken anything lower, and was incredibly close to taking home a rosette a couple years ago, the highest award in the show. Also what's cool is that the Philly Flower Show is the largest indoor flower show in the world, and with it comes all that pomp and grandeur. I'm not posting this to show off, as a lot of you could grow these guys just as good, but to show that CPs, and Heliamphora in particular, are finally becoming aesthetic show worthy plants, and in my case, the judges found them exceptional. Also, I was the first person in the history of the Philly Flower Show to enter CPs, about 8 year ago. The Flower Show has been around for over 100 years and no one has entered even a VFT! What are people thinking?
I found winning very uplifting, because people still mostly think of CPs as novelty plants, in the impulse section of the supermarket. Finally we CPers might get respect from the judges who are still so embedded in honoring 'traditional' plants. So if there are flower shows near anyone reading this, go and take your best plant, and get some awards! Let's get these plants legitimate finally! Here are the pics;
There are three entry days; I was too busy to enter all three, but I entered this plant of two of the three days, and it took first place both times. BTW, there is no best in show, only categories to enter. I entered this in the 'foliage plant, in flower' category, which is the largest in the show, and got the first in that category. Still pretty cool when it beats out some established winners.
Here's a closer shot; I was worried that the prissy judges wouldn't like the live sphagnum cascading over the pot, but I guess I was wrong- I thought it looked good anyway, and they must have not minded.
Anyway, take care all, Nick Haywood (bluesboy)
