So I have been growing some fly traps and sarracenia for a few years now. Nothing special, just one from Lowes or HomeDepot. Anyways, I am getting some more plants from online and was going to build a bog garden. I bought a bag of Premier Sphagnum Peat Moss. (It comes in 3cu bales). And I am just wondering if this is stuff is okay to use. I have read a few places where people say yes and a few places where people say no. Any thoughts?
Thanks

You bought that at Lowes in a white and green wrapper? I've been using that stuff for years. Perfectly fine.

For several years, I have been having problems with sphagnum peat moss purchased locally in northern California. Locally, the only brands that I have found are Premier and Sunshine, with the Premier being a few dollars cheaper. For years, I had great success with Sunshine, but 3 years ago I noticed a buildup of mineral encrustation around the rims of my pots and my VFTs started dying. I switched to Premier and do not get the mineral encrustation, but my VFTs are doing poorly. My Sarracenia seem to be much more tolerant of the minerals. I talked to the Sunshine distributor and it turns out that the stuff found in retail stores is not their best quality peat and advertised as a "soil conditioner". This mass consumer product is of variable quality, depending on where it was extracted. sungro.com/products_displayProduct.php?product_id=27&brand_id=8Sunshine has 4 grades of more expensive Professional Peat Moss that range from the most fibrous (Grower Grade Blue) to less fibrous (Grower Grade White). sungro.com/products_displayBrand.php?brand_id=4Unfortunately, in my remote small town area, no one sells the Professional grades and I would have to order a pallet to get it.

The only brand of peat I have not had trouble with is Black Gold. The last two bales of consumer grade Premier I got were low in salts but high in something that made the soil very stinky. Most plants did not like it even after it was washed. Don't get me started on Sunshine... I don't know what I would do if I couldn't get Black Gold.
