Everybody, how do I tell the difference between a dying VFT and one beginning to hibernate? After a squirrel ate much of two mature plants, I brought them indoors to protect them. The squirrel-eaten ones are growing well, but I worry that my Clayton's Red Sunset has just died, because each petiole blackened. Ever since the squirrel attack, blackening petioles frighten me because I wonder whether I've harmed the other flytraps somehow.
I bought the flytraps a refrigerator and a bottle of Captan, though I don't know whether to put my Paradisia into it now when that plant may already be "sleeping" on my bedroom floor about a foot from a transparent door that leads to an outdoor porch. There's one green petiole on that plant, its others are black or blackening, and the plant already looked "sleepy" when I got it in the mail from a carnivorous plant nursery, where I usually buy plants, pots and soil.
Maybe the Claton's Red was sick when it got here?
Thanks for your help.
Bill

Thank you, NAM. I would be happy to read the FAQ, but each time I click on the link, I see the word "forbidden."

sarracenia.com appears to be down at present.
Your plants don't sound too happy but it's impossible for us to give a definitive diagnosis.
Photos would help.

I don't know whether my plants are happy, partly because I don't know what CP growers mean by "happy" when they talk about happy plants. To me, the phrase "happy plant" suggests that plants have mental states when I don't know of any reason to believe that they do. But I'm not trying to turn our conversation into a philosophical debate. From what I can tell, CP growers mean that their plants are healthy when they say that they're happy. Three of my VFTs seem healthy because they're green, growing fast, and not blackening. That's why i thought,"The VFTs probably need much the same conditions because they belong to the same genus and to the same species. Since the two oldest VFTs are growing well, maybe something's wrong with the Royal Red. Maybe some Royal-Red petioles are blackening because mailing shocked the plant. The healthy(?) plants have lived here for months, but the Royal Red here about a week ago. I'd like to show you a photo, but I don't know whether I can take a good one with my iMac's built-in digital camera, my only digital one.

What do I do to post a photo? I haven't found any instructions on the "help" page.

Go to imgur.com, select computer, and then to the right you will see codes( links) to the photos, select the one that says BBCode for forums.
Then copy that code and paste in here and hit post reply.....that should do it!

I'm sorry about the lousy photo quality, but I'm hoping and praying that the poor plant is healthier than it looks. Maybe now that I've moved it to my desk where my grow light helps the terrarium plants thrive, maybe the poor thing will perk up. Six petioles look all right, the other four died.

There's a post on how to post images.
If the plants are turning black from the crown out most likely they are dying.

Thanks, NAN. What could I have done better when I posted the photo?
