OK ... R-Bit-of 'Bach'-Story ON The so-Called Dual-Conundrum of Sphagnum-&-Lignin is-Probably Called-For @-This Point IN-Time so-to-Speak: (1) Most-Books ON-The More Ancient-Nooks-&-Crannies of The Lingering-Spectrum of The-Plant-Kingdom Often-Mention THART as-R-Suport-Mechanism Sphagnum as-an Entity Among The-More 'Successful'-Pandemic-Members of The-Bryophytes Is-Sing'ly-Devoid of LIGNIN ... &-Yet Sphagnum Peat-Moss Can-Attain Percentages of-Lignin Approaching 30-40 Percent by-Voume & Go-ON @-Deeper-Depths &-Geological-Compression To-Form LIGNITE &-Eventually COAL!!! >(*~*)< Considering THART-Peat Is Usually Harvested from the Upper-Eschelons of R-Bog &-Pictures of Canadiuan-Bogs IN-Particular Thart Go-ON Almost Seemingly-Endlessly for Hundreds if-'Not' Thousands-of-Miles Devoid-of much-Other 'Counter'-Vegetation ... One-is-Left-Puzzl'e'ling as-to-The True-Source &-Nature of This Lignin so-to-Speak!!! >(*~*)< OK THART's The-'First'-Part-of-The-Query Begun: (2) The-Second Point &-Seemingly Curious Adjunct to-The-Above Is-THART Nitrogen-Content of Any-Form-of Peat from Wood, Sphagnum to Carex ('Sedge') Is-Usually if-'Not' Always Proportional to Lignin-Content so-to-Speak ... &-Yet And-Here's The-RUB so-to-Speak ... LIGNIN Itself According to-All-The-Books One-Reads Contains NO-Nitrogen!!! >(*~*)< / >(*~*)< BIZARRE To-Quote The-BARD:AC-BUNT:"Peats differ from many other materials used to make loamless mixes because they contain relatively large amounts or nitrogen, usually between 1 and 2.5% of their dry weight ..." So-Basically 1-Kilo of Dry-Peat Contains ~ 10-25-Grams of Nitrogen ... Probably Equivalent to-R-Few Million Insects ... Again 'Suggesting' Thart The Insect-/-Nitrogen Paradigm Just-on Basic Darwinian-Principals Is-IN-Error so-to-Speak IE Nature Always Goes For the Shortest-Route If-It-Indeed Means or-Entails Increased Fitness. Of-Course If-One 'Assumes' The-Nitrogen Is-Placed-THERE by-Some Organsim Living-ON The-Lignin &-Fixing-Nitrogen from The-Atmopshere The-Saga Becomes More-Palatable / Logical as-Well-as 'Tenable' ... but-again This-is 'Just'-An-Assumption so-to-Speak. So-'What'-to-Do? Well The-'Best' Approach, "I"-Believe, ... Is-to-Remove the Question of Lignin Althogether from The-Equation as-Well-as The-Medium Completely &-to-See What-Happens &-What-Adjustments Needed-to-Be Done / Made IN-Order For The-Medium to-Come Back-Into-Line with Its Natural Counterpart:"PEAT" so-to-Speak. Since The-Majority of Heart-Wood That Forms Wood-Peat Is White-Wood ... "I"-Have Begun Using Newspaper-Cellulose as-R-Initial Starting-Point of This Research [Everyone 'Has'-to-Start Somehwere]... but Brown-Paper-Bags Eventually Can-be Used that-Also-Contain much Hemicellulose or Secondary-Wood so-to-Speak. For-Those-of-You Who-Haven't-been Keeping-UP with The-Story Thus-Far: Newspaper-Cellulose Cat-LITTER Has-Rhoughly The-Same if-'Not' Similar AFP (Air-Filled-Porosity) as Sphagnum but ~TWICE The-Water-Holding Capacity ... so-it-is R Wetter-&-'Colder' Medium ... Especially @-Night so-to-Speak so-May-be-Good for-Darlingtonia IN-The-Long-Term Eventually Once ALL-The-'Bugs' Have-been Kicked-OUT of The NEW-Medium / System so-to-Speak.

Richard - so you ask the question: can cellulose-based cat litter be used effectively as a cp medium? Please keep us posted on what you find. Just because a material doesn't occur in the natural environment of a given plant species doesn't mean that it can't be an effective potting medium. I like perlite but have never seen it in the wild ;D.
And the Rumex...?

Well ... "I"-Don't-Want to-'Sound' CONTRITE-Here But WOOD-Peat Is Just 'One'-of The Many-Forms of Peat-OUT-THERE IN-The-Real-World ... Which IN-The-Case-of NEWPAPER-Cellulose Is-Taken-from the HEART-Wood or 'White'-Wood of the Tree Once-it's Been DEBARKED so-to-Speak ... &-of-Course Those Scoffing &-My-'Use' of Paraffin Wax-Candles Have-Obviously NEVER 'Heard'-of:"PEAT-Waxes" Nor Read-Any of The Works by Selman-WAKSMAN All-The-Way-through-to People-like: "CLYMO" so-to-Speak ... but Then-again They're Probably 'Just' 9-to-5ers Following R-Funding-Trail as-R-Means to-an-Existence Rather-than Trying-to Unlock R-Salient-Facet &-Perhaps Potential-Important Aspect of The Natural-World so-to-Speak!!! >(*~*)< / >(*U^)< Now-Richard Be-'Kind'!!! >(*U^)< OK The-ANSWER's IN The-'Grey'-Soil You-'find' @-Most PRIME CP-Sites ... Can-You 'Work'-It-OUT ... Because "I'-Don't 'Think' The-BEATLES-'Did' so-to-Speak!!! >(*~*)< / >(*U^)<

For The-Answer's Goanna-be Soo-Simple & Soo-Cheap It'll Leave People Scratching Their-Heads as-to-'Why' it-Took Nearly 40-Years of Painstaking Soul-Destroying work to Finally Get-OUT-of-Peat &-INTO R-Medium that-was Scientifically more-Rewarding so-to-Speak!!! >(*~*)< / >(*U^)< Basically the Answer Lies-IN The Chemistry-of ALUMINIUM as-Well-as The Ecology-of-CELLULOSE so-to-Speak!!! >(*~*)< Although "I"-Will Attempt to-BLUE-Something Before 'Asking' for The Plane-Tickets From The-ICPS as-Discussed &-Promised Over-R-Decade-R-Go Now so-to-Speak as-Is My-Search for-Some-form of FINALITY to-The Whole-Saga so-to-Speak!!! >(*~*)< / >(*U^)<
