Hey Folks,
Again and again, I think to myself, that I really wish I could adequately communicate to the ICPS membership that THEY, not the editors, command the content of CPN.
Frankly, I feel that the internet has been a key reason the content of CPN has changed. The various fora (forums) such as this one function as the new "News and Views" section, better than CPN ever did. But CPN and the other CP journals are still the best place to publish your cool articles on cultivation, field exploration, etc. Take advantage of it.
Take control of CPN. Make it interesting to you.
Cheers
Barry

Would anyone be interested in reading an article I wrote for the VCPS about building my greenhouse?
Yes Barry this is the greenhouse you so rudely REFUSED to come and see here in Perth.
You're not my friend anymore and I've torn out your signature in the front of my copy of your book...........
(this is a joke for those of you who aren't familiar with Barrys wicked sense of humour).
Dave.

Hey Dave, Well, alas, I'm sorry we didn't make it out to your greenhouse when Phill Mann drove us up to Perth from his place. But it turns out that we ate up the rest of that day with Phill looking at spectacular hillsides covered with Drosera stolonifera, D. menziesii, D. rosulata, D. pallida, D. erythrorhiza, D. macrantha, D. marchantii, and D. gigantea. (I'm sure I missed some, not to mention all the Stylidium and orchid species!) I think you would have made the same sacrifice! After all, when you were in the field with Beth and Phill and me, I saw your eyes goggling too! Anyway, one caveat is that CPN doesn't reprint stuff that was already printed in other journals---but if you have content that you haven't published elsewhere, that would be great!!! Evil Barry

Hey Barry,
You were right, my eyes were goggling! It's always really cool to see CP's in the wild and it was extra great to be lucky enough to share it with you guys. There is no stress about you guys being stretched for time, like I said at Phill's, it was your holiday not mine.
From talking to Phill it sounds like you saw just about every species that grow here in WA. Not a bad effort really considering how short your stay was.
It's a shame the CPN doesn't print preprinted articles, but I can understand why. You wouldn't want to subscribe to two or three newsletters only to discover you've already read some of the articles before.
Nicole, when I was asked to write an article for the VCPS newsletter I was nervous like yourself. I thought my story would be any one of; boring, too short, too long, hard to write etc, etc. What I found was as soon as I started to write it kind of just flowed out onto the page. Plus it was kind of cool to see my name printed on the article, just like Aidan suggests.
To give myself courage I thought of how much I enjoyed reading the stories other people told in the newsletter, their misadventures added a bit of humor and the photos added a great dimension to the story.
I know I would enjoy reading an article that told a story instead of trying to make sense of all the technical stuff we see all too often in the standard CPN articles. Especially if it was written by a female, that would be a fresh perspective.
I must say that when I received my first issue of the CPN I was a little bit dissapointed with the high level of technospeak. I thought I was subscribing to the typical newsletter that was aimed at the layperson who wanted to see pictures and entertaining stories about field trips or how to articles about building greenhouses or setting up terrariums etc.
This is just me and what I like and I'm not suggesting there should be changes made so please don't jump up and down those of you who like the technical stuff.
Dave.

Hey Dave, If you want broader distribution of your article, you could post a link to your article. If the VCPS newsletter is not publicly available on the web, you might see who owns your article -- you or VCPS. Usually the author retains ownership of their work. If so, you could put a pdf or html copy of your article in your web space and link to that. BTW, it is the policy of ICPS to make all CPN articles older than 3 years publicly available on the ICPS web server. They are located at www.carnivorousplants.org/cpn/Search.phpArticles younger than 3 years are available to ICPS members in a password-protected area at icps.clubexpress.com/

Why yes, we females are superior and Nicole's submission would most certainly be a fresh perspective ;)
