Ok so I have been trying to go to one of their meetings for a while now, but have never managed to make it. However I managed to get the time and gas money to drive there. After getting lost a few times I finally found the Alhambra chamber of commerce. I walked into a building dimly lit and sort of confused. Only to be greated by a very freindly man who directed me up a flight of stairs into a room.
At first thought I expected a small room with 3 or 4 people, but when my eyes' adjusted I saw a large conference table in a Large room. Their were bunches of people in this room. Scattered around the room were clusters of people eyeing the plants on the table that people had brought to show and sell.
I went over and sat down in a chair. Actualy intimadated by the group of people who all seemed to know each other and what the plants were. However a really nice lady...(can't remember her name sadly)...urged me to go talk and meet people and look at the plants.....so I started to talk to some people....then noticed that there were actually people younger then me....which for some reason made me really talkative...there were so many plants....The people were so nice...They talked to me about the care of thier plants....How to propagate the plants....some secrets to get the plants to flower fast.....what to becareful of and who to buy from..lol..there was also a guy who was growing his utrics in glass contianers with a bottom with holes in it as so that the roots with traps were growing out the bottom visibly.....then a boy who was trying to get rid of this little tiny seedling sarr gave it to me....not sure if it will make it since it already has 3 of its' 4 leaves dying, but I will try to keep it alive...
I immediately started on a buying spree....I bought an aray of things. U. Longiflolia, U. Sandersonii, P. Esseriana, some dwarf droseras, U.inflata, U subulata, P. Lusianica, D. Alica....and a few others which I can't remember their names lol. Then a really funny and nice man named Art gave a small lecture if you could even call it a lecture rather a speach on his green house, some of his exotic nepethes, and how he takes care of his plants.
Then a man named Ivan opened up a box and passed out a free plant to everone there of his new cultivar of drosera Ivans' Paddle. He then explained how it was a hybrid of a hawaiin and californian species of drosera. Then explained that his hybrid didn't go dormant like the california species unless left out side....After a couple jokes to a picture of a mountian with a creek by it where he had collected the parent plant.....(ivans paddle...up a creek...)....then Art saying, " Don't cha know that, this is the mountain where the 'werethefookRwe' indians are from) he really was a comedian.....lol
It was an all around great experience.Which I look forward to going to another meeting in 2 months.
