Hi all,
I'm interested in what people are growing outside around Melbourne. I live in the Dandenongs and would like to know what can grow outside without any real care... except for keeping them watered and stopping the possum eating them!
cheers JJ

Many things. Currently, and in the past I have grown the following quite successfully- Roridula gorgonias, Drosophyllum, Cephalotus, many species of South African Drosera as well as of course tuberous and pygmy Drosera, Sarracenia, a few hardy Nepenthes in more protected areas, Utricularia, Pinguicula, VFTs and various others. We have quite a good climate for growing CPs outdoors, the most difficult problem to counter is the heat and low humidity in summer. If you are up in the Dandenongs though you may have a little more difficulty with some genera due to the colder winter nights.

thanks Sean yes, i've had them outside during summer this year, my wife bought me this little greenhouse type thing i used, however when i forgot to open the flap during the day, the inside temperature shoots to >50C, unsurprisingly causing the top of my Sarracenia pitchers brown up and die. I should have thought of these things before buying black pots, too :/ I'm hoping the greenhouse thing will help in winter though, keeping the frosts off etc.
