(We're joining the #givingtuesday movement a bit late, but joining it nonetheless!) IMG_2077 by richjam1986, on Flickr Dear fellow nature lovers and carnivorous plant enthusiasts: Hopefully most of us in this community understand that many of the plants we love to grow are becoming progressively more scarce and endangered in their wild populations due to improper land management, pollution, development, and poaching, among other issues. There are several organizations that have taken on the responsibility in trying to fight these issues and protect the land and ecosystems that rare plants and animals depend on. Here at Meadowview Biological Research Station, we have taken a targeted approach to preserve and restore pitcher plant and longleaf pine ecosystems in our neighborhood of Virginia and Maryland. In 21 years as an organization, Meadowview director Dr. Phil Sheridan has succeeded (with the invaluable help of key volunteers and supporters) in preserving the genetic lineages of the last remaining Virginia populations of Sarracenia flava and Sarracenia purpurea on our Central Virginia Preserve, and Joseph Pine’s preserve (now totaling over 290 acres combined). We have also made great progress in preserving 16 other state rare, threatened and endangered plant species. Research performed at Meadowview has provided key insights into many areas of pitcher plant and longleaf pine genetics, biochemistry, ecology, and habitat restoration techniques, among other areas of research. (see our research link : pitcherplant.org/Five-Step-Process/Research.html ) We have made big strides as an organization in improving and increasing our infrastructure, trained staff, and equipment required to advance our cause and do the work that we do; but there are still ways we want to improve, and succeeding as a non-profit is expensive! We require continued support to do the work that we do and improve our organization. After a weekend of potentially intense shopping, Giving Tuesday has become a tradition to remind us that this is also a season for giving; a reminder to focus on more than material goods. On this Giving Tuesday we hope you will consider us in your holiday philanthropy. Learn more about our organization and find our donation link on our home page: www.pitcherplant.org Note that we are also accepting volunteers! Happy holidays, and good growing! Dear Friends of Meadowview: Meadowview is again participating in the Community GIVE and we need all the help we can get raising money for pitcher plant conservation and capital improvements. The GIVE is a one day, 24 hour, fund raising event hosted by our local Community Foundation. In the past two years we've raised over $24,000 in direct donations and received $4000 in prize money from the GIVE - all of this money going directly to land conservation/acquisition on our preserve system or to fund infrastructure. You don't have to donate a lot, although that won't hurt, but the minimum donation is $25. If we get 101 unique donations (e.g. you, your spouse, partner, friend, etc.) we're eligible for a $10,000 endowment prize - one of the stated objectives of our fund raising campaign. So… the more people we can get to donate the greater our chance of making it to the endowment prize. We typically have 40-60 friends and members donate SO WE NEED YOUR HELP TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL OF ACHIEVING OVER 101 UNIQUE DONATIONS. There are also many other cash prizes we are eligible for, just read the rules/FAQ for details in the link below. Here's the link to donate on May 3. There are other links at the top about the GIVE. thecommunitygive.org/npo/meadowview-biological-research-station The link goes live for donations on May 3. Contact if you have any questions and PLEASE let other folks know about this event and ASK THEM TO DONATE to Meadowview. Sincerely, Phil Sheridan, Ph.D. President and Director Meadowview Biological Research Station 804-633-4336 meadowview@pitcherplant.org www.pitcherplant.org

Dear Friends of Meadowview: Tomorrow, May 5, is YOUR day to make a big difference in pitcher plant conservation by donating to Meadowview on the Community GIVE. The Community Give is a one day fund raising event for local non-profits in the Fredericksburg, VA region and is hosted by the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region. Our goal this year is to raise $100,000 to both pay off the remaining $43K note on the Wilson tract and to purchase the M. Latka tract on the Central Virginia Preserve. Can you help with this effort? We are working on buying, protecting and restoring a series of connected properties to complete the Central VA Preserve to ensure protection of the rare northern-most pitcher plant bog in Virginia, a state threatened species (New Jersey Rush), a globally rare gravel bog, and to expand the Duff McDuff Green Jr. Birding and Wildlife Trail. You can donate electronically to Meadowview through the Community Give portal on May 5 at: www.thecommunitygive.org/#npo/meadowview-biological-research-stationPlease help us to “Buy the Bog” and ensure a future for these incredible plants. The more money we raise, and the greater number of folks that donate money, make us eligible for CONSIDERABLE cash prizes which will benefit our conservation efforts. Each unique gift of $25 or more makes us eligible for these prizes. Hi everyone, Meadowview's online catalogue is now updated for Spring 2015! Note the that the PDF version is still not up to date, and some pictures still aren't up, but these will be up in the next few days. We have several new offerings, including bulk venus flytraps, bulk mixed D. binata varieties, soil mixes, a tropical GIZMO beginners kit, tree club moss, S. rubra ssp. gulfensis, Rhexia virginica, and reduced price on S. alata 'veinless'. Take a look HERE: www.pitcherplant.org/Online-Catalog/index.html Plant sales are used towards paying our operating costs as a non-profit conservation organization, and ultimately help us keep doing the work we do to restore and preserve pitcher plant habitat in Virginia, so we thank you for your support! Hi R1V3:
Are you Matt Monroe? I see an e-mail that says "Thank you" in the text with a "Receipt..." in the subject line. I presumed "Thank You" meant thank you for the order, a little more clarity in the subject would have been useful. In addition, the PayPal date is July 18, not the "to the day" of July 15 you referred to in original text. As our web site says we do a lot of other things besides plant orders and little things like this consume a lot of time for a limited staff.
Please confirm this is you and we will process the order.
Sincerely,
Phil Sheridan Meadowview

Hi R1V3:
We still have not received an e-mail from you. Your actual name or e-mail address would be useful for us to search for your e-mai to see if it went into the junk file. We have a link on our web site called "Contact Us" which should be an obvious route for reaching us with a problem. Sensitive no, just a little annoyed with your approach to the problem. It's considered common courtesy to contact the seller first with a problem. Our organization is very transparent as a non-profit and strive to do the best we can do.
Sincerely,
Phil Sheridan Meadowview

Hi R1V3:
It would have been nice if you had called us or e-mailed us about your order first rather than post a potential problem on a public forum. I went back and looked in our hard copy order files, and in e-mails for orders on 7/14 and 7/15 and see no order from you (this might explain why you didn't get an order from us if we didn't receive it). Can you please e-mail us a copy of your PayPal order or other information about the order (I presume PayPal). Please send the e-mail to our horticulturist Richard Curzon at richard@pitcherplant.org and copy me at meadowview@pitcherplant.org. We will be more than happy to ship your plants promptly once we have an order in hand.
Sincerely,
Phil Sheridan, Ph.D. President and Director Meadowview Biological Research Station

Hi Folks:
I am very sorry to hear that "Big Pond" Phill Mann is gone. This is just terrible. It was a pleasure meeting Phill for the first time at the 2012 ICPS conference, although I had corresponded with him for a number of years. Goodbye friend.

Hi Folks:
Some updates. Busy summer for us at Meadowview. The Community Give raised almost $13,000 and we will be settling on the purchase of the Center for Biodiversity at Joseph Pines Preserve on 8/15. I'll provide more details after we close and in our upcoming article about Meadowview in CPN. Stay tuned!
