Great photos! It looks like the photosynthesis of the plant inside the seed creates bubbles that help to break open the seed.

Thanks Barry and Travis - I cannot wait to see my new seed flower like these!
Steve - did you get any clarification on soil, lighting, temps? I understand these may like it on the drier side, but still want to be sure.....How long did you leave yours in the water before moving to the desired medium, Barry?

I am afraid to reveal that since I've been doing germination studies (germinating a batch of 15 seeds every three days) I haven't been paying too much attention to the seedlings afterwards, other than to observe the early development stages. I believe this plant behaves as a suspended aquatic until it develops an elongated shoot. At that point, I recommend moving it to a Sphagnum slurry, and let it find its own way. In my experience, once U. humboldtii gets enough biomass, it will start producing the aerial leaves.
Interesting.

Steve - did you get any clarification on soil, lighting, temps? Not on this forum. I did post the question on another and someone was kind enough to give me a several paragraph long description of their experience growing this plant. Here's the reply on another forum: www.terraforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=112532

Barry, I just recieved some seed from Travis and better than 1/3 had germinated in the vial. So no germination problems for me. I'm excited as these are the first Utric seeds I have grown, not counting subulata and livida, as I had no say in those. Thank you both for the seed and prompt arrival. Greg Harmison

Hey Barry, I thought you might like an update on the U. humboldtii seedlings, as you can see they are now producing bladders and imature leaves. They have grown pretty fast since I moved them to a Sphagnum slurry.

One of my seedling has produced it's first upright, light gathering stolon (AKA leaf)!
I'll try and post a photo here soon.
