An artist friend is staying with us this week and has decided to make some pencil drawings of Nepenthes pitchers. Nepenthes bicalcarata - upper pitcher Nepenthes rafflesiana - upper pitcher I just wonder what people might think of them?

Rob - Outstanding work... I just wish I had such ability!
Though I hate to say it, you might want to slap copyright symbols on the images or your friends work will rapidly end up copied all over the net.

Rob Very nice drawings. They aren't from Will are they.? Have the artist make a set of them and my name will be on the first set for sale. Cheers Phill

Phill, Spot on. Will is over here for a month. He says "Hi". You'll be seeing each other again at the Singapore Garden Festival in July.
Hi Aidan, we thought of the copyright thing too. The resolution is low enough that Will doesn't mind if it's spread around the net. The actual image has a lot of fine detail that just doesn't show here.

Rob,
Does your friend do any "webwork"? I can see where this kind of drawing could be used in designs to enhance the look-n-feel of lots of sites.
Cheers Pete

oooh wow! that is spectacular. HOLY WOW! That is like a photograph filtered to a drawing. damn! that is art. here is my measly try at a pencil drawing. sorry for the excess sharpening on this one....scan was too light...so I had to darken it a bit.

Rob, could you please ask him....how he does that? could he give any tips on how to draw those things on black paper? is it just charcoal erased selectively? I want to try something like that next time.

Will's coming to Singapore?!? His drawings carry a particular style unique to him so it was easy to tell that those were his creations.
Please send regards to him on my behalf. Thanks!

Hi Pete, Webwork isn't something that's occurred to him before. Will produces really awesome work with drawing animals and is just turning his hand to Nepenthes. If I can keep him focussed on Neps for long enough to get some variety it should be interesting. He's currently working on a N. burbidgea pitcher that's looking to comt out as his best so far.
Varun, those drawings aren't bad at all! Will's reaction was very positive. Myself, I can't draw a matchstick man - have no talent at all in that direction, so I'm just in awe of anyone that can take a pencil and a pice of paper and produce an image.
Cindy, Will says's "Hi" back to you. He's coming for the whole setup period for the SGF and the entire time of the exhibition. We're toying with the idea of producing prints of his Nepenthes works for sale there. 200,000+ visitors to a show - surely he should sell a few!

Hi Rob, Wow! that means a lot coming from you guys. Thanks so much. lol! Comeon Rob! What if you can't draw a matchstick....you are able to art-fully raise these plants that can serve as spectacular subjects worthy to be sketched by Will. Congrats in that itself my friend. Cheers, V

Rob, Wow! You are leading quite a team of people to Singapore in July. Diana, Will, Phill and your Sri Lankan man (forgot his name)... LOL Are you sure three sales booths are enough?

They're great drawings Will has done. I was very impressed when I saw his work in Borneo at the Nep conference. I've also done a few myself of a couple of my favourite species. It's a pity it's so hard to find time to do more at the moment, as they make such great topics. Cheers Steve
