So I am interested in installing a bog garden at my new house, and wanted some opinions on a preferred location. I have two options: 1) Eat facing front yard, direct sun from sunrise until midday
2) West facing back yard, direct sun from midday until sunset with a slight shading for about an hour halfway through the afternoon from a tall tree.
Either way, the plants would receive about the same duration of light, but during drastically different times of the day. Seeing as I am in zone 8b, I am interested in temperate species with an observed winter dormancy. This puts the growing season during the spring/summer/fall when the sun is more intense during the latter portion of the day.
Any thoughts?

East facing would be preferred likely in this case. With it being the front yard, I would make sure the bog is made secure however.

I agree with hcarlton. In the afternoon it will be possibly too hot for some species. How big will be your bog? The bigger the better in warm climate. You should think about some pond area for cooling and more humidity. Maybe you find some interesting ideas in my patchwork-bog project.

Hi Danny,
You mentioned you're in zone 8b, but in what part of the country? That makes a big difference since 8b could be anywhere from the Carolinas to the Pacific Northwest. That would make a difference on site selection.

Definitely Western Exposure. We so often have cloudy mornings that your plants on the East side of your house wouldn't get as much sun. They would do ok, but you wouldn't have as vibrant colors as with more direct sun. Depending on what part of town you live in, the security issue is very real too. The backyard will take care of that better. I know too many people that have had cp stolen from porches and yards.
If you're interested I know one of our customers that has a nice bog garden visible from the sidewalk in North Portland. I can PM you with the location if you are ever up in that neighborhood.
