Has anyone noticed if their heli's flower at different times of the year? My tatei var tatei has just started to open its flowers this last week but my others flowered over a month ago. Any way here are a few photos. I've also noticed the flower stalks are quite fleshy compared to the others heli's in my collection which have much woodier flower stalks. Dave.

Looks awesome. Do you do anything in summer to keep them cool I was a little hesitant to get a Heli other than a tequila because of the cooler conditions they like.

Hi Locko,
I don't do anything special to keep my helis cool infact we just had 44 dec C today and they are just loving it.
The GH has one personal sized evap cooler that draws air from the outside and I found it was relatively comfortable inside temp wise though a little muggy for any length of time.
Probably the biggest noteable difference is that my plants receive mist watering overhead for 1 minute on the hour during the day which keeps the water passing over the roots. I don't sit my guys in pots as I'm sure with the high humidity the roots would rot quite quickly.
I have a sneaking suspicion that heli's are not quite so worried about the heat just so long as they have plenty of water passing over their roots during the day. It may have something to do with the fact that a lot of growers have their heli's in tanks.
Anyone out there willing to try a little experiment? It may help dispell a long held myth about these great plants. I would be more than willing to give a detailed description of my setup to anyone who wants to have a go.
Dave.

Great Dave! Tatei flower is one of the most elegant in my humble opinion.
Did you try to cross polllinate the flowers?
François.

Hi Francois,
No I've not given it a go, do they need vibration before they release their pollen or is it more like sarracenia where an artists paint brush is all you need?
I find in my conditions with over head watering and the large amount of water vapor in the air from the humidifier, most of the pollen on my plants flowers stay wet and the fertilisation rate is very low to non existent.
My VFT's only managed to produce about 20 seeds from over 15 flower stalks. Most of the seeds came from one or two flowers that I managed to keep dryer. The rate for my sarras was a little better as their structure helps keep them free from water droplets but it wasn't anything to write home about.
It looks like I'm not going to get anything from my cephs either as they are always dripping with condensation.
I think I will have to change everything to the tray method at some stage if I want to get good seed set.
Dave.
